What is a Doula?

What is a Doula?
"Doula" is the Greek word for "servant", and this term has recently come to be associated with a trained assistant who serves a mother before, during, and after birth.
A doula provides physical, emotional and informational support for the mother and her partner, accompanying her throughout her entire labor and delivery.  She does not take the place of the medical staff, but helps guide parents with balanced information and perspective so they can make informed decisions.  During your pregnancy she helps you form your own birth plan, and provides you with support and relevant resources.  She helps the parents work through their fears, concerns and desires for their birth.  After delivery, she helps promote early bonding with the newborn, and is available to help with immediate breastfeeding.

Support During Labor
During labor, a doula may use or show the mother and partner how to use: massage, counterpressure, a birth ball, hydrotherapy, different movement and positioning, hot or cold compresses, breathing techniques, vocalization, visualization, music, aromatherapy, and constant encouragement.  She will help to encourage optimal fetal positioning and maximum comfort for the mother.  The doula remains alert and sensitive to what the family needs during any point of the labor.

Dads and Doulas
As a doula, I do not take the place of the husband or partner, or diminish his role.  Rather, I enhance his role, and free him up to stand by the mother.  I help provide the father with reassurance, reminders and ideas of how he can support the mother most effectively.  He can be involved as much or as little as he is comfortable with-- it is up to the two of you.  Having been through labor and birth myself (4 times!), I can relate to the pain of the mother and can suggest helpful comfort measures to try.  I can help the father be in better harmony with the mother's emotional state.

As Your Doula
I believe the birthing process is a beautiful experience and a natural process that does not, in most cases, need any medical intervention.  As your doula, I want to help you have the most satisfying birth experience possible, and will work my hardest to help you achieve that end.  I also wish to build a relationship of mutual trust with you as we meet throughout pregnancy and during the postpartum period.

My desire is that birth would be a positive, beautiful event for your family!  Birth is such an intimate experience, and it would be an honor to share in this moment with you.
