Why I Became A Doula

I have been married to my lover and best friend since 2003 and have 3 wonderful small children-- Japheth, 5, Gabriel, 4, and Eliana, 1.  The roller coaster of our third pregnancy ended in the birth of our stillborn son, Seth, at just 21 weeks.  Since giving birth to my own children, my passion for birth has been increasing-- and more specifically, my passion to help mothers through this incredible, life-changing experience.  This is why I became a doula.  I believe birth is a beautiful and natural process.  As a doula, I am able to educate women about the process of labor so that they can participate fully in their birth.

All of my children were satisfying hospital births overall.  But it was not until recently that I became aware of how much say I could have had in my births and how differently they could have gone if only I had known that I could decline certain interventions like Pitocin, artificial rupturing of the membranes, and immediate cord clamping.  I want to provide mothers and their partners with resources and information so that they can make informed decisions, and also to provide continuous emotional and physical support (which is SO needed!  I know!) so that they can have the most satisfying birth experience possible!
